Fall 17'

These following are the reflections I wrote for the events.

Fall 2017: Projects

Skype with Adam Alter     September 25, 2017

It is interesting that Adam Alter thought his book will be controversial and people will be mad about the book. He mentioned the progress of many technologies, and people keep improving them to make less harm to human, for example the change of yellow screening is better for people’s sleep. Alter also mentioned how the technologies affected us negatively from four perspective: social, physical, psychological, and financial. I also have strong feeling about all of the perspective, because it is so obvious that we see it everywhere. Take “financial” as an example, I known many peers at my age (especially boys), put lots of money into their video game, in order to get better “equipment”. Also many adults play cards online with other players, and lost thousands in several hours. I think we should be more careful about the devices. We don’t have to destroy them, but we have we be aware of not letting devices control us.

CT Forum          September 27, 2017

Justice Stephen Brayer basically talked about how the globalization affect the law system in United States. He talked about the merchants of book not only in united States but also can be abroad. He probably wanted to introduce the change to the public. Globalization plays a huge role in the law system and it may affected the law and rule in different ways.

Park Street Cleanup        October 7, 2017

Even though it is hard to get up in the Saturday morning, overall it is a wonderful experience. By the time I get there with Jean and Tiffany, I was a little surprised. That area was mainly formed by Latino community, and at the place we met each other before the cleanup, I was wondering that there is none white people, even in another student group from the other school. That makes me think about something besides the cleanup. I guess I had seen more cigarette butts than ever in my life, but it is interesting to exploring new stuffs when I was doing the cleanup. It is a different culture, and I learned that except some big cities, there is no cleaner in the city, most are volunteers, which is different from cities in China. Overall it was a meaningful trip and I wished we can do something like this more in the future.

North Korea Crisis                  October 18, 2017

It’s the first time I am enrolled in a pretalk. Which absolutely tightened my nerve and made me more focus. It is nice to listen to other’s thoughts before the actual event, because I feel like that I was more involved. North Korea’s nuclear issue is an alert for everyone in the world, and that’s something that many countries concerned about. There were news about the head minister in different countries talking about solution to it. It is a huge concern for China, because it sits right next to China. However, I did not expect that the speech would be so aggressive and targeted. One of the speaker shocked me, but I also learned from that it is also a difference between countries. The right of free speech is hard for foreigners to accept, I felt offended at first, but I found it more reasonable after realizing the cultural difference and the special attribute of certain field. Personally, I think that North Korea is a free country that has no limitation from international law, so it should has the right to own nuclear weapon.

China Town Hall                 October 24, 2017

With the election last year, and new policies in the United States, many international students like me are more concerned about the relationship between two country. It is clear that the United States want to cooperate with China, however, during election, the new President said words about China stealing U.S. business, which is contradict to what the lady said in the live video. From my perspective, we definitely want a good relationship between U.S. and China, because it determines our education and life.
